2002 Ford Taurus Wagon

There's a big problem with the front coil springs in the 2002 Taurus. I
had been visiting a friend in another town and when I went to back up
out of the driveway in December, there was a huge bang and a hiss as the
front driver's tire "exploded". This tire was less than 2 weeks old.
When CAA arrived, the fellow took one look and said that the coil spring
had broken and slashed the tire - and- it was the "6th or 7th of these"
that he'd seen in the last 3 months on a Ford Taurus. The bill was
over $700. On returning home, I contacted my dealer to complain and he
suggested I write directly to Ford as there was no recall notice. I
have never had a reply.
Meantime, I have researched on an American site which listed over 100
identical complaints - almost all of which were with the front driver's
side. I discovered that earlier models had the identical problem and
there was a recall. However, Ford seems unwilling to admit to this
continuing problem. Had I been on the highway when this happened, it
could have led to a fatal crash.
How many others have experienced this problem?
