Subject: some info on rear end collisions
Date: 9/29/2002
I just read the mother's letter and it immediately brought tears
to my eyes. I recently was in a rear end collision with a 97 ford
taurus. I was driving and I had a passenger in the front seat with
me. Thankfully we walked away from the accident with only some back
and neck injuries. Although she was 36 weeks pregnant at the time,
baby is fine. Both the driver and passenger seat collapsed during
the collision. Almost a month later my back and neck still bother
me and I will start physical therapy next week. I immediately went
to the internet to look for some info. There is very little out
there. I immediately filed a complaint with the NHTSA, National
Highway Traffic Safety Association. They do have a website which
I am not sure of. Sad but true, they have known for the last 30
years that these major car manufacturers have faulty seats and 40,000
to 50,000 people die each year due to rear end collisions. There
is also a autosafety hotline, which I can't find the number for.
Makes me cry every time I read something on the subject. I also
get very angry when I read that it would cost less than $50 per seat
to strengthen them. I got this info from:
http://cbc.ca/consumers/market/mp30/car_seatbacks.html
There is also another website called http://www.autodefect.com
that has some great info.
Some general info I found on:
http://www.cobenlaw.com/caseactivites/3_rearimpact.htm
I am still searching and if I get any more info I will send it your
way if you would like.
My condolensces for the mother who lost her child.
Jodi
PS. I also have the website now www.nhtsa.dot.gov/hotline and the
phone nubmer is 1-888-327-4236, 888-DASH-2-DOT. I hope this helps.....
