Last week on a rainy day I was making my usual rounds to the Head Start
families I visit. I then made a brief stop in the office because my next
appointment wasn't for an hour. When I went out to my car I found it would
only act like it was going to start, but the engine would not catch. "Spark
plugs" I remember thinking. Luckily, we had purchased the extended
warranty to 75,000 miles and since the car only just turned over to 57,000 I
called the Ford line and it was towed a half an hour later. Here's where
the nightmare begins..

The next morning, as I am tooling around in the rental car they gave me, I
receive a call from the mechanic asking me a few questions about where I had
last bought gas, yada yada. He said he just wanted to rule out a few things
before he got started. Imagine my surprise when my husband calls me at work
to tell me the engine is ruined because it is full of water. Apparently the
mechanic said it probably happened when I went through a puddle at high
speed (he never admitted saying this to me!). I was completely
flabbergasted. The car had been running fine, then BOOM ruined.

Worst of all, it is not covered by our warranty. I am completely disgusted
with the way this has been handled to date. They sent a ford person to
survey the damages and (surprise, surprise) they concurred with the
mechanic, the engine was full of water. I am not doubting the mechanic's
ability to see water in an engine, I just think it can't possibly be my
fault.

Anybody know about a class action lawsuit involving a design defect. That
is the only logical conclusion I can come up with. My worst fear is that
the engine will be replaced and the problem will happen again because I
didn't do anything different than I had all the other times I drove it in
the rain. I know not the drive through deep puddles, BTW.

Any thoughts?

Shelly
